| The SBC Individualized Language Learning
Center houses the Individualized Language programs of eight different
language departments specializing in self-directed learning (Arabic,
Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Russian).
OSU was a pioneer in the development of individualized instruction
beginning with a 1976 grant from the National Endowment for the
Humanities. Today OSU has the longest running individualized programs
in the country.
Individualized offers self-paced, mastery-based language learning
programs designed to mirror the courses offered in the classroom.
Each course of I.I. is the equivalent in content and in credit
hours to the classroom-track course at the same level.
The IILC center is open during the following hours (effective SU08):
Monday - Friday : 9:00am to 7:30pm
Saturday : 10:00am to 5:30pm
I.I. courses differ from classroom courses in the following ways:
- Mastery-based language learning: Because of the highly
independent nature of individualized language learning, all students
must perform at the level of 80% or better to continue in the
program.
- Flexible credit: One complete course is worth five credit
hours. In the classroom, these 5 hours would be completed in one
10-week quarter. Students have the option of spreading
these five credit hours out over two or three quarters. If
they wish they may also move more quickly.
- Flexible meeting times: All work in I. I. is done on
an appointment basis. Students set deadlines for their work and
make the required appointments when they are ready and when it
is convenient for them. How often they come in to see an instructor
depends on how quickly they are working and how much additional
help they need.
- One-on-one instruction: All instruction in I. I. is
one-on-one, allowing the instructor to focus on your individual
needs and questions.
- Student autonomy : Individualized instruction allows
students to be in charge of their own learning in a variety of
ways: scheduling required and optional appointments, determining
the number of credit hours for a given quarter, deciding when
to take tests and quizzes.
